A minimum of 13 passengers perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
